MSW Program Information Sessions

Application Period

Between October 1 and January 15 all applicants are required to submit the UIC Online Application. After the University has received an application the applicant will receive a link to upload the MSW Supplementary Application and Supplementary Documents. There may be a delay of up to a day or two before the link is received. The deadline for submission of the UIC Online Application is 11:59 p.m., January 15. Meeting that deadline is critical to applicants having sufficient time to submit the MSW Supplementary Application and all Supplementary Documents by 11:59 p.m., January 31, 2016.

Application Procedures

In order to apply to the MSW Program individuals must submit the following items electronically:

  1. UIC Online Application
  2. MSW Supplementary Application
  3. Supplementary Documents:
    • Resume
    • Personal statements
    • Contact information for references
    • College transcripts
    • Test of Academic Proficiency (TAP), ACT Plus Writing, or SAT test score - For School Social Work applicants only

In order to apply using the online checklist you must download and install on your computer the most recent version of Adobe Reader. You may download Adobe Reader here Once you have installed Adobe Reader please proceed with the following step-by-step instructions.

Application Procedures Step-By-Step

Step 1 : Submit the UIC Online application by clicking one of the following links: Domestic applicants| International applicants. When prompted, select MSW- Master of Social Work from the menu of degree programs. You must submit this application first to initiate the application process. Once submitted you will be directed to a confirmation page. A confirmation and Acknowledgment Letter from the UIC Office of Admission and Records will be emailed to inform you that the document upload page is available.

Once you access the application document upload page you will proceed to upload the documents discussed in Step 2 to Step 7. Those documents will be listed under "Additional Program Requirements" on your checklist.

As you upload documents each document can be verified as received by checking the "Received Date" in your application status and the "Status Field" which will state "Verified - Correct." A missing received date and Any status other than "Verified Correct" may indicate that you must upload documents again or follow up with the UIC Office of Admissions and Records or the Jane Addams College of Social Work. Additional requests may be added after submitted items are reviewed by the UIC Office of Admissions or the program staff. Step 2: Submit your MSW Supplementary Application. This is a fillable pdf form.

Please follow these steps to complete the fillable pdf form in order to ensure that the form will be uploaded successfully:

  1. Save the file by going to "File" and then "Save As." Select a place on your computer from where you will retrieve the file.
  2. Complete the form.
  3. Re-save and close the form
  4. Re-open the form and confirm the content is visible
  5. At that point, you can upload this form to your application

Please Note: The College recommends applications use "PC" rather than "Mac/Apple" products because of the difficulties experienced when using "Mac/Apple" products.

Applicants who do use "Mac/Apple" products have two options when submitting their application documents:

  1. They may fill out the forms, print them, scan them and save them to their computers, save them as a pdf and upload them to their respective sections on the application checklist Or
  3. Students may use a PC to submit their application materials.

Step 3: Submit your resume using this fillable form ONLY. Save the form and then upload it to your application according to the steps above. Click here for the form. Do not load your personal resume. Use the form provided.

Step 4: Submit your Personal Statement using this fillable form. Save the form and then upload it to your application according to the steps above.

Please Note: You must limit your typed responses to the allotted space: approximately 300 words for the first statement, 250 words for the second statement, and 250 words for the third statement. In addition you must upload all the questions at one time as one complete document. You will not have an opportunity to revise the statement once it is uploaded. Step 5: Submit the contact information for your references by using the reference form on your online application checklist. Once you submit the email addresses for your references the university will automatically contact the references by email to request an electronic letter of recommendation. Please Note: References should be individuals who are qualified to assess your ability to successfully complete a graduate social work program and/or your ability to be a good social worker, consistent with the mission and values of the Jane Addams College of Social Work. Such individuals include work supervisors, volunteer supervisors, and academic advisors.

Recent college graduates should have at least one instructor or someone who can attest your academic ability and performance.

Individuals applying to the Advanced Standing Program Option should include at least one referee who can speak to an applicant field experience.

Do not use friends, family members, or persons whose interaction with you is superficial.

Step 6: Upload and submit electronically the transcripts for all undergraduate school attended. DO NOT SEND OFFICAL PAPER TRANSCRIPS BY MAIL.

Please Note: Applicants must request that official, sealed academic transcripts from each college attended be sent to their home. Those transcripts should be opened , scanned and saved to your computer or other storage device , and finally retrieved and uploaded to your application checklist.

Online academic histories will not be accepted.

Finally, it should be noted that individuals who accept an offer of admission to the College and confirm plans to attend the College in the fall will be required to submit to the College an official transcript from the degree issuing undergraduate college or university in a sealed, unopened envelope. Confirmed students do not have to submit that same transcript to the university because the College will forward the document it has to the University.

Step 7: Test of Academic Proficiency (TAP), ACT Plus Writing, or SAT test score
